5 of family killed in Moulvibazar fire
Family members who had gathered for a wedding ceremony could not come out of the building due to the blaze
Five members of a family were burnt to death and another was injured when a fire broke out at a two-storey building in Moulvibazar town on Tuesday.
The deceased are Suvash Roy, 65, owner of Pinky shoe store, his daughter Priya Roy, 19, his brother's wife Dipti Roy, 48, wife of his brother-in-law Dipa Roy, 35 and Dipa's daughter Baishakhi Roy, 3.
Fire service officials said the fire originated at the Pinky Shoe store on the ground floor at around 10:15 am, and soon spread to the first floor residence. Twelve members of Suvash Roy's family, who had gathered there for a wedding ceremony, could not come out of the building because of the blaze.
On being informed, four units of fire fighters rushed to the spot and rescued seven people. Of them, critically injured Mona Roy Pronoy, 60, brother of Suvash Roy, has been admitted to a clinic.
Fire fighters brought the blaze under control at around 12noon and recovered the bodies of five people. The bodies were sent to the morgue at Moulvibazar Sadar hospital.
Moulvibazar Fire Service Deputy Director Mohammad Abdullah Harun Pasha said the cause of the fire is not yet clear. The flames spread quickly because of the gas riser. A probe body will be formed to investigate the incident, he added.
Moulvibazar Additional Deputy Commissioner Mallika Dey said the district administration has given one lakh Taka for the cremation of the bodies.
