Buet students on demo, block roads
Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) blocked the Palashi-Bakhshi Bazar link road for three hours on Tuesday over their 16-point demand that includes development of residential halls and introduction of teacher evaluation system.
The Buet students have been demonstrating, boycotting all exams and classes, since Saturday.
Around a thousand students gathered on the surrounding roads of Buet and Palashi area at 11am on Tuesday, which caused difficulty to traffic movements.
The traffic came to normal when the students lifted the blockade at 2pm.
Their demands also include formation of a special committee comprising teachers and students to build a Buet gate, re-election of the students’ welfare director and digitalisation of students’ payment process.
On Saturday, students submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor with a three-day ultimatum, locking up the administrative building and the office of the VC.
“The university authority is not paying any heed to our demands,” said Anis Rahman Mithu, one of the organisers of the demonstration.
“The VC and the university authority are aware of the students’ demands and we are trying to resolve it immediately,” said Prof Abul Kashem Mia, the newly appointed director of the students’ welfare wing of Buet.
