Four sued for embezzling Tk3 crore of Cox's Bazar International University
Using fake documents, they withdrew around Tk2.98 crore from the bank account of the university in the name of purchasing land property for the university, according to the case statement
Four people, including the secretary of the trustee board of Cox's Bazar International University, have been sued for embezzling around Tk3 crore of the university.
Prof Abdul Hamid, treasurer of the university, filed the case with Cox's Bazar Police Station on Tuesday.
Khairuzzaman, Officer-in-charge (investigation) of the police station, confirmed the matter.
The accused in the case are Mujibur Rahman, the secretary of the trustee board, Mujibur's brother Abdus Sabur, former finance director of the university, his another brother Abdul Mabud and Moniruddin Arif, Security-in-charge of the university.
Salah Uddin Ahmed CIP, founder and chairman of the board of trustees, Dr Abul Kashem, vice chancellor, Md Abdul Khaleq, accounts officer, Atiquzzamal Chhoton, assistant accounts officer, and Md Nur Uddin Selim, admission officer, have been made the witnesses in the case.
Cox's Bazar International University is a government-approved private university. Salah Uddin Ahmed, (also former general secretary of the district Awami League and a prominent businessman) applied to The Ministry of Education to establish the university. Then in the light of the announcement made by the prime minister at a public meeting in Ukhia in 2013, the ministry approved Salah Uddin Ahmed's application, according to the case statement.
But accused Mujibur Rahman, who got the charge of communicating with the ministry on behalf of the trustee board, fraudulently obtained a letter from the ministry in his own name as an entrepreneur of the university.
Since the inception of the university, Mujibur Rahman had been embezzling money along with other accused by creating fake documents, said the statement.
The accused forged the signature of Salah Uddin and made many resolutions of the trustee board.
Using fake documents, they withdrew around Tk2.98 crore from the bank account of the university in the name of purchasing land property for the university, according to the case statement.
In this regard, Salah Uddin said, "We are surprised and ashamed to see the irregularities and deceptions done by the trustee board secretary Mujibur Rahman. Now, with the approval of the government, an initiative will be taken to remove him from the post."
However, Mujibur denying all the allegations said, "I am not a signatory to any financial matter of the university. So no one was given any check or paid any money with my signature. I am the entrepreneur of this university and all the investment here is mine. I have kept Salah Uddin Ahmed in the board of trustees as he is an elderly person of our locality. But he wants to include incompetent people on the trustee board. He filed the case against me by creating pressure on the treasurer after a dispute arose between us over the matter."
Mujibur further claimed that Salah Uddin had been paid a lot of money as the mediator to get the approval of the university. But now as the university had turned to a reputed educational organization, Salah Uddin had succumbed to greed, he added.
However, Salah Uddin denied Mujibur's allegations, saying "I did not sell the ownership of the university to anyone. I made Lion Mujibur Rahman the secretary of the trustee board for the convenience of management and communication on some conditions."
