Ex-Jatiya Party MP among 7 to walk the gallows for killing MP Liton
A Gaibandha court has sentenced seven people to death in the former Awami League MP Manjurul Islam Liton murder case.
District and Sessions Judge Dilip Kumar Bhoumik pronounced the verdict today.
The death row convicts are - former Jatiya Party MP from Gaibandha-1 constituency Abdul Kader Khan, Rashedul Islam Mehedi, Shahin Miah alias Shanti, Anwar Hossain alias Rana, Abdul Hannan, AZM Samsujjoha and Chandan Kumar Roy. Of them, Chandan is absconding, while others are behind the bar.
Another accused in the case Subol Chandra Rai has been dropped from the charges after his death.
The judge ordered police to take necessary steps to arrest the absconding convict. He also said the trial of absconding Chandan will start soon after he is arrested.
MP Liton was shot dead at his home at Shahbaz in Sundarganj on December 31, 2016.
Police charge-sheeted the eight accused including Abdul Kader Khan on October 17, 2017. All of the accused gave a confessional statement before the court.
Reactions on the verdict
MP Liton's wife Khurshid Jahan Smriti expressed satisfaction over the verdict. She also demanded the quick execution of the verdict.
Gaibandha Public Prosecutor M Shafiqul Islam Shafiq said the court gave the judgment as charges brought against the accused in the case were proved.
Death convict AZM Samsujjoha's lawyer Jahidul Islam Jahid said that they did not get fair judgment and his client will be acquitted if they appeal in the High Court.
He claimed that he did not get enough time to prove that his client was not involved in the case and political influence has been induced in the case.
People in the court premises have also expressed their satisfaction over the verdict.
Ten-year-old boy was shot by Liton
MP Liton came into light after he shot a 10-year old named - Sourav Mia - in both legs when the boy was walking on a road near his house with his uncle at Gopalcharan village in Gaibandha on October 2, 2015.
Sourav's father Saju Mia filed an attempt to murder case with Sundarganj Police Station.
Locals said that Liton was returning home in Bamandanga town that day. He stopped his car at the town's BRAC Intersection in Gopalcharan area and told a man to get into his car around 6am.
Instead of getting in, the man began to run being panicked. Seeing, furious Liton opened fire, which hit Sourav.
