Four, including freedom fighter, assaulted in Sonargaon
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon following a feud over land properties
Four people, including a freedom fighter, were allegedly beaten and hacked by a councillor and his followers over land disputes in Narayanganj's Sonargaon on Wednesday afternoon.
The four are freedom fighter Abdul Baten, his wife Rowshan Ara Begum, their son Mosharraf, and Fatema Begum.
They were admitted to Sonargaon Upazila Health Complex.
Md Monir Hossain, a relative of Baten, filed a case with Sonargaon Police Station in this connection.
Local people said Baten and his neighbour Shahjalal, councillor of ward 1 of Sonargaon, had long been embroiled in a feud over boundaries of their homes.
The two had an argument on Wednesday afternoon. At one point, Shahjalal led a group of 10-15 men armed with homemade weapons and attacked Baten's home.
Baten said, "I have been living here for 50 years, Shahjalal won the election and forcefully tried to occupy our lands. When we protested, he attacked us."
Shahjalal said, "Baten has occupied 17 percent of my land. Local people prompted him not to, but he defied and tried to build a garage there. When I protested, they attacked me."
Moniruzzaman, Officer in-Charge of Sonargaon Police Station, said, "A case has been filed. We will investigate and take actions accordingly."
