Omera Solar, a subsidiary of the country's business conglomerate East Coast Group, has installed a rooftop solar system to produce 462.44 kilowatt electricity for Fakir Fashion Ltd in Narayanganj's Rupganj.
Omera officials said the installation will meet the demand of the apparel maker to a great extent from the renewable energy source, according to a press statement.
Fakir K Nahid, managing director of Fakir Fashion which employs 12,000 workers, officially inaugurated the rooftop solar system at the factory Monday.
CEO and Head of Business of the garment Abdullah Al Maher, its Chief Financial Officer Shaheduzzaman Choudhury, East Coast Group's CEO Masudur Rahim and its Senior Manager Sakib Hasan Khan and representatives from Dutch Bangla Bank were also present, among others, during the inauguration, it read.
At the event, global brands from Europe and the United States including H&M, C&A and Inditex sent congratulatory messages to Fakir Fashion for switching to green technology for power generation.
Fakir K Nahid said that his company was committed to producing electricity from renewable sources to cut production cost and save the environment.
"Global brands are also encouraging garment factories to reduce carbon emission. My company wants to increase the production to 2 megawatt from the current 462.44 kilowatt in near future, if the outcome from this project is satisfactory," he continued.
Abdullah Al Maher, CEO of Fakir Fashion, said that the apparel maker was encouraging other industries to go for renewable energy.
The current 462-KW project was equivalent to planting 15,345 trees a year, he added.
East Coast Group's CEO Masudur Rahim said Omera Solar has targeted to produce at least 50 megawatt of electricity from rooftop solar systems for industries of the country by 2021-22 fiscal year.
"Omera Solar has already signed MoUs with several companies to reach the target and more companies are showing interest," he added.
"We have a dedicated team to achieve this target. My company has partnerships with global solar system manufacturers while Omera has its own factory for making solar panels in Dhaka's Ashulia," he further said.
