Ulab’s FactWatch recognised as Bangladesh’s first data verifying organisation
FactWatch was recognised by the International Fact-Checking Network
FactWatch, an initiative of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (Ulab), was recently recognised as the first data verification institution in Bangladesh by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), an affiliate of the Poynter Institute.
Through this recognition, FactWatch became the first Bangladeshi organisation to be included on the list of 85 active IFCN-recognised data verification organisations around the world, read a press release.
FactWatch was first established in 2017, with initial funding from the American Center in Dhaka. It is currently being run by Ulab's Center for Critical and Qualitative Studies.
It is led by Professor of the Department of Media and Journalism Sumon Rahman who is also a noted poet and writer.
About the recognition, Prof Rahman said, "We have been recognised by one of the most prestigious organisations in the world for our work, which is very rare. FactWatch, made by Ulab students, now stands in line with many of the top media outlets in the world. To hold onto it, we have to work more vigorously and professionally in the future."
Earlier in 2015, the International Fact-Checking Network was established to conduct independent and quality data verification activities worldwide to strengthen mutual communication. The organisation was one of the nominees for this year's Nobel Peace Prize.
