Fire at Sylhet power plant snaps electricity supply
With the suspension of power supply after the incident, residents’ suffering have exacerbated due to water shortage.
The residents of Sylhet have been living without electricity after a fire broke out at Kumargaon Power Station on Tuesday morning. It remains uncertain when power supply will be restored.
Locals said the fire broke out at the station when two transmitters of the power station burst at around 11 am. Fire engulfed the surrounding areas and damaged equipment of the station.
When informed, five units of Sylhet Fire Service and Civil Defense rushed in and tried to douse the flames.

Deputy Director, of Sylhet Fire Service and Civil Defense, Shawkat Hossain, said the fire is now under control. According to preliminary reports, the fire may have broken out from the transmitter oil.
Chief Engineer Mokammel Hossain of Sylhet Polli Bidyut Distribution Department said that they are still working to restore the power supply but are not sure when they will be able to do so.
It could be awhile before power supply is restored. The damage of the fire could not be immediately assessed, the official added.
