Eminent Journalist Mizanur Rahman Khan, joint editor of the daily Prothom Alo, will be buried at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard today.
His first namaj-e-janaza was held at the yard of Supreme Court Ainjibi Samity and the second one at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) around 10:10am and 11am respectively.
Attending his third namaj-e-janaza at National Press Club (JPC), Information Minister Hasan Mahmud said "Mizanur Rahman Khan was one of the biggest journalists in Bangladesh. He has done unparalleled journalism on the courts, the constitution and human rights. His departure at this time is painful for the nation."
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and are ready to help them any way we can," he added and said Mizanur Rahman's family will also receive financial assistance from the government's welfare fund if necessary.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir after attending the janaza praised the departed journalist for his unbiased writing and said "He continued his fearless writing by overcoming any obstacles or intimidations."
Prothom Alo Deputy Editor Anisul Hoque, National Press Club President Farida Yasmin, Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) President Sheikh Abdullah and Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury also spoke at the press club.
After the third namaj-e-janaza his body was taken to his long-time workplace Daily Prothom Alo office for paying last tributes.
Mizanur Rahman will be buried at the Martyred Intellectuals' graveyard, said his younger brother DRU general secretary Moshiur Rahman Khan.
The eminent journalist died while undergoing treatment at a Dhaka hospital on Monday evening.
Journalist Mizanur Rahman tested positive for the novel coronavirus on 2 December last year. He was admitted to Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital in the capital on 5 December.
As his physical condition deteriorated at the hospital, he was shifted to the Universal Medical College Hospital in the capital on 10 December.
He received treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital but his condition worsened on Saturday evening, and he was put on life support. He breathed his last at 6:05pm on Monday.
