Some 552 houses were gutted as a massive fire broke out at Nayapara Registered Rohingya Camp area of Teknaf upazila in Cox's Bazar early Thursday.
According to local sources, the fire broke out in a house in the E-block of the camp around 1.30am and engulfed the adjoining houses.
On information, fire service unit from Teknaf fire station rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire under control after several hours frantic effort with the help of local Rohingya people.
Around 25 Rohingya people were injured in the flame.
The explosion of the gas cylinders in every house made the fire uncontrollable, according to fire service sources.
The fire gutted around 552 Rohingya houses in the block, one UNHCR community centre, and two other adjoining houses of the camp.
However, the exact reason behind the fire could not be known yet.
The affected people claimed that the loss caused by the fire was around Tk3.5 crore.
Primarily, it was assumed that fire could have originated either from a gas cylinder blast or cigarettes or mosquito coils.
Abdul Hannan, in-charge of the Nayapara refugee camp, confirming the fire, said that investigation is underway to find out the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, Cox's Bazar Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner Shah Rezwan Hayat visited the affected Rohingya camp at around 10am.
