Elections will be held through electronic voting machines in 31 of the 56 municipalities and by ballot in 25 municipalities
The Election Commission (EC) has announced the schedule for the 56th municipal elections across the country in the fourth phase according to which elections will be held on 14 February.
The last date for submission of nomination papers is 17 January.
Senior Secretary Md Alamgir announced the schedule after being approved by the EC on Sunday.
The secretary said the nomination papers will be scrutinised on 19 January. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is 26 January. Elections will be held through electronic voting machines (EVMs) in 31 of the 56 municipalities and by ballot in 25 municipalities.
Voting in 56 municipalities on 14 February will be held in the following districts: Thakurgaon, Rajshahi, Lalmonirhat, Narsingdi, Rajbari, Barishal, Sherpur, Chapainawabganj, Natore, Khagrachari, Bandarban, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Habiganj, Cumilla, Chattogram, Kishoreganj, Karimganj, Tangail, Patuakhali, Chuadanga, Feni, Chandpur, Madaripur, Netrakona, Jashore, Rangamati, Munshiganj, Shariatpur, Jamalpur, Mymensingh, Joypurhat, Noakhali, Brahmanbaria, Laxmipur, Faridpur and Sylhet.
At present, there are 329 municipalities in the country. According to the schedule of the first phase of elections of 25 municipalities on 22 November, the elections were held on 28 December. The turnout in this phase was 65.6%.
On 2 December, the schedule of 61 municipal elections of the second phase was announced, according to which, 61 municipal elections will be held on 18 January. Of these, 29 municipalities will use EVM and 32 will use ballot paper.
The schedule for the third phase of 64 municipal elections was announced on 14 December and it will be held on 30 January. The latest schedule of 56 municipalities has been announced. The election schedule of 206 municipalities has been announced in four steps.
On the day of the election, the voting will continue from 8 am to 4 pm.
