Police have detained three contractors over damage on Dhaka-Agartala international road in Brahmanbaria.
"The detained contractors extracted sands from the Titas River and stored it in a place dedicated to the railway. Thus, a part of the road adjacent to the Titas Bridge has collapsed due to the extraction of sand from the river and continuous rains," said Tahmina Akhter Raina, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Akhaura.
The detainees are Abu Nahid Sohag, 38, Shanu Khalifa, 45, and Hassan Khalifa, 32.
Officer-in-Charge of Akhaura Police Rasul Ahmad Nizami said, "We have detained them on the instructions of the UNO."
Vehicles moving on the road are at risk due to the collapse. The Roads and Highways Department has been repairing the collapsed part of the road.
