Riders and drivers will see several additions to Uber app including new seat limit, mask verification, rideshare health safety education, and an updated cancellation policy
Uber Bangladesh on Sunday announced the launch of several Covid-19 specific features and policies to set the highest safety standards for riders and drivers.
The announcements included an interactive Go Online Checklist for riders and drivers, a mandatory mask policy for both, pre-trip mask verification selfies for drivers, an updated post-trip feedback mechanism and a cancellation policy.
The features and policies will change the way a person rides the next time through Uber app.
To allow for space between the driver and rider during an Uber ride, the company advised riders to sit in the rear seat. Only two riders will be allowed in a car, it said.
Before the drivers can go online, they will be asked to confirm, via a new Go Online Checklist that they have taken certain safety measures and are wearing a face mask.
A similar checklist has been built for the riders. Before every trip, they must confirm that they have taken precautions such as wearing a face mask and washed or sanitised their hands.
Before the drivers can start accepting trips, they will be asked to take a selfie with a mask on. Uber's new technology will verify if the driver is wearing a mask.
The company is adding new options for feedback including if a rider or driver is not wearing a mask or face cover.
Drivers and riders can cancel trips if they do not feel safe, including if a user is not wearing a mask or face cover.
"Working with global and local public health authorities, we have compiled safety tips and recommendations that will be sent to all riders and drivers," Uber said.
Complementing these safety features are Uber's efforts to ramp up the distribution of safety supplies – masks and sanitisers worth over Tk50 lakh for free – to drivers, reads a press release.
Ratul Ghosh, head of Uber East India and Bangladesh, said: "As people start moving again, it's important we take all necessary precautions to help keep ourselves safe and to make the next trip safer for all."
