The contractor cut 22 million cubic feet of Rangapahar hill in Chunti Wildlife Sanctuary.
On Wednesday, the Environment Department imposed a fine of Tk 50 crore on Toma Construction, a contractor engaged in cutting down hills in the Dohazari-Cox's Bazar rail line project.
In October, the contractor cut 22 million cubic feet of Rangapahar hill, part of the Chunti Wildlife Sanctuary, without permission from the Department of Environment.
Aside from fines, the Department of Environment will also file a case against them for destroying the environment.
Regional Director, Department of Environment, Mohammad Moazzem Hossain imposed the fine after a hearing at the Chittagong Regional Office of the DoE. Representatives of Toma Construction were also present during the hearing.
Mohammad Moazzem Hossain confirmed the incident to The Business Standard.
"The Department of Environment's report found evidence that 22 million cubic feet of Rangapahar hill had been cut, jeopardizing the ecosystem. We decided to impose a fine of Tk50 crore, and will file a case against them as well," he said.
