Two killed in Gazipur road accident

Two workers, including a woman, were killed when a covered van hit them in Gazipur on Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Rina Begum, 38, wife of Nasir Uddin of Sunamganj, and Mehedi Hasan, 45, son of Abdul Quader, former chairman of Jayashree Union of the same upazila.
Rina worked in an Ashulia factory in Dhaka and Mehedi Hasan in a company in Tongi.
Manjurul Haque, officer-in-charge of Mauna Highway police station, said Mehedi and Rina were crossing the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at Sreepur when the accident occurred.
"When they reached the middle of the highway, Rina fell on the road after being hit by a speeding motorcycle and Mehedi rushed to rescue the injured Rina when another Dhaka-bound covered van crushed the two and fled killing Rina on the spot," said Manjurul Haque.
Locals took seriously injured Mehedi to SreepurUpazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, he added.
Manjurul Haque said filing of a case was underway in this regard.
