Union parishad chairman arrested for embezzling money
Baharchara union parishad chairman along with Saint Martin's union parishad secretary took Tk35.5 lakh from the union parishad fund in the name of 12 fake projects
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday arrested Maulvi Aziz Uddin, chairman of Baharchara union parishad in Cox's Bazar and Riazul Haque, secretary of Saint Martin's union parishad, over embezzlement of Tk35 lakh in the name of fake projects.
The anti-graft body arrested the duo from Kolatoli area of Cox's Bazar town at about 11 am in connection with a case filed by the ACC.
Riazul Haque, deputy assistant director of district office Chittagong-2 and investigation officer of the case, said the Baharchara union parishad chairman along with Saint Martin's union parishad secretary took Tk35.5 lakh from the union parishad fund in the name of 12 fake projects.
Officer-in-Charge of Cox's Bazar Sadar Police Station Shahjahan Kabir said the arrested people were handed over to police.
Local people alleged that corruption took place in land acquisition to construct Marine Drive Road. The council got about Tk1.25 crore as compensation and Tk35 lakh was embezzled allegedly by the chairman and the secretary.
