Zia Charitable Trust Graft Case: HC rejects Khaleda’s bail plea

The High Court (HC) on Wednesday turned down a bail petition moved by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia in Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan represented the ACC at the court while Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and Advocate Zainul Abedin were present for the BNP chairperson. The state was represented by Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
Earlier on Tuesday, the HC adjourned the hearing on the bail petition till Wednesday.
The BNP chief has been sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment in the case.
On October 29 last year, a special court in Dhaka convicted her in the case and awarded her seven years’ imprisonment.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station on August 8, 2011.
The former three-time prime minister filed the petition on 28 July, saying she deserves bail on the ground that she has been suffering from different diseases and already served one and half years in jail in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
Begum Khaleda Zia has been undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for various illness since April 1.
