Under this system, a taxpayer will be able to prepare the A-challan from their bank account if it has online transaction facility
Taxpayers will now be able to prepare their income tax payment online and get the tax submission document – which is called treasury challan – through the Internet.
On Thursday, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) introduced an automated challan (A-challan) system to check submission of fake challans and thwart the trend of tax evasion.
NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem and the Finance Division's Senior Secretary Abdur Rauf Talukder jointly inaugurated the system virtually.
Under this system, a taxpayer will be able to prepare the A-challan from their bank account if it has online transaction facilities.
Banks will issue the automated challan for their account holders; the barcode embedded on the challan will contain all the relevant data.
The barcode will be able to indicate the slab under which the taxpayers have deposited money to the government treasury.
Reading the barcode will also enable taxpayers to check whether their taxes were deposited to the government exchequer.
Taxpayers can also use the A-challan system while submitting their annual tax returns.
The NBR and the Finance Division launched the system under the "Improvement of Public Financial Services Delivery through Implementation of BACS and iBAS++Scheme" under the "Strengthening Public Financial Management Programme to Enable Service Delivery (SPFMS)" Programme.
Speakers at the event said that through the automated system, taxpayers will be able to deposit money of the treasury challans at any branch of Bangladesh Bank and all the commercial banks.
Currently, only nine branches of Bangladesh Bank and 1,224 branches of Sonali Bank receive the money of treasury challans.
They also said the A-challan scheme will be implemented across the country in three phases. During the first phase, it will be implemented at all branches of Sonali Bank, Rupali Bank, Agrani Bank and Janata Bank in Dhaka city.
During the second phase, it will be implemented at all branches of commercial banks in Dhaka city; finally, the a-challan system will be implemented nationwide at all branches of Bangladesh Bank and all commercial banks during the third phase.
