The coastal area of the Sundarbans has been severely hit by the cyclone Amphan. Thousands of houses in the coastal areas of Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira districts were damaged in the overnight storm on Wednesday.
Thousands of trees have been destroyed. Heavy rains and strong tidal waves have broken the embankments in many places and submerged croplands and fish ponds in different areas. The communication system has been shut down due to big uprooted trees on the road. The entire Sundarbans coast has been turned into a devastated area after Amphan.
Koyra Sadar Union Parishad Chairman Humayun Kabir said, "The Water Development Board (WDB) embankment on Koyra river broke and saltwater overflowed the locality. Besides, crops in about 5,000 hectares of land in Koira upazila have been inundated by the storm. Around 5,000 small and big fish farms washed away due to the broken embankments. About 7 km of road has been destroyed."
Koira Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shimul Kumar Saha said, "The Water Development Board (WDB) embankment had broken at about 13-14 places in Koira Upazila. Attempts are being made to quantify the damage."
