Rain, gusty wind grip Satkhira
About 2,14,400 residents of the coastal areas have been taken to shelter till 10am this morning
An uneasy calm has dawned upon Satkhira coastal areas along with rain and gusty wind as cyclone Amphan might hit the areas this evening.
Bangladesh's Met office has advised maritime ports Payra and Mongla to hoist great danger signal number 10. There may be tidal surges of 5-10 feet height, said Satkhira Meteorological Department Officer-in-Charge Zulfiqar Ali.
Meanwhile, a drizzling with gusty wind prevailing in the district, and it will increase in the afternoon, the meteorologist said.
Amphan, presently moving at a wind speed of 17 to 20 kilometers per hour, will hit Satkhira coastal areas with a wind speed of 150-160 kilometers per hour, he added.
About 2,14,400 residents of the coastal areas have been taken to shelter till 10am this morning, said Abdul Baset, Satkhira District Relief and Rehabilitation officer.
Some 147 cyclone shelters and 1700 educational institutions are being used as shelters in the district.
Risk Of Power Outage
"The high wind impacted by the cyclone Amphan likely to uproot electricity poles and sever electric wire in district, said Satkhira Palli Bidyut Samity General Manager Santosh Kumar Saha.
The chairman of the Palli Bidyut Samity has instructed to carry out emergency work in the aftermath of the storm in places where electricity connections will be disconnected. For this, a hotline service has been launched urgently seeking information, the general manager added.
The district has 8,000 kilometers of power distribution lines.
