The Muslim Brotherhood was founded by Hassan al-Banna in March 1928 as an Islamist religious, political, and social movement. The group spread to other Muslim countries but has its largest, or one of its largest, organizations in Egypt, where for many years it has been the largest, best-organized, and most disciplined political opposition force.
Prime minister Mahmud Fahmi al-Nuqrashi ordered the Brotherhood dissolved. He was killed by a Muslim Brother in December, 1948.
In February, 1949 the secret police assassinated Hassan al-Banna.
Sayyed Qotb executed
In1954, brotherhood was blamed for a murder attempt against President Gamal Abdel Nasser. Then president Nasser decided to ban the Brotherhood.
In August 1966, Sayyed Qotb, who was behind the assassination hanged by Nasser's regime.
Thousands members of the Muslim Brotherhood were arrested or go underground Until Nasser's death in 1970.
In 1971, President Anwar Sadat granted the Brotherhood's leadership amnesties.
Sadat signed a peace treaty with Israel without obtaining concessions for the Palestinians, vilified by wider Arab world. On October 6, 1981, he was killed by Islamic extremist soldiers.
President Hosni Mubarak, in 1984 the recognises the Brotherhood as a religious organisation but refused its registration as a political party.
In 2005, its sympathisers gain one-fifth of parliamentary seats in legislative elections. In 2010 elections, it emerged unsuccessful from the first round. It boycotted the second round denouncing massive fraud.
Mohamed Morsi became Egypt's president
Following the 2011 Revolution the group was legalized,[and in April 2011 it launched a civic political party called the Freedom and justice Party (Egypt) to contest elections, including the 2012 presidential election when its candidate Mohamed Morsi became Egypt's first democratically elected president.
Morsi overthrown and arrested
One year later, however, following massive demonstrations, Morsi was overthrown by the military and arrested. As of 2014, the organization has been declared a terrorist group by Russia, Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia and is once again suffering a severe crackdown.
Outcome of revolution
Following the revolution of 2011 that overthrew Hosni Mubarak, the Brotherhood was legalizedand emerged as ‘the most powerful group’ and the ‘most cohesive political movement’ in Egypt with ‘an unparalleled ability to mobilize its followers’.
On June 17, 2019, Morsi dies after falling ill during a court hearing.
