Rohingya relocation to Bhashan Char begins next month
The government planned to temporarily send 1 lakh Rohingya to Bhashan Char
The relocation of Rohingyas to Bhashan Char in Noakhali will begin from next month, and the process of listing the Rohingyas who will be moved has already begun.
Cox's Bazar District Administrator Md Kamal Hossain told The Business Standard: "We heard that some Rohingya families have shown interest in going to Bhashan Char. We will wait a few days for them to make a final decision."
"Once we get their final decision, we will fix a date next month and send them there. We will prepare everything before that," he added.
The government planned to temporarily send 1 lakh Rohingya to Bhashan Char. The Bangladesh Navy has already built houses and shelters for them on the island.
The administration is surveying the Rohingya camps for families who are willing to be relocated. Many of them have already agreed to go to Bhashan Char.
Sources at the camp say that 17 families in the Teknaf camp have already agreed to go to the island, while a few more are considering the matter.
Bhashan Char is a recently emerged island in the Bay of Bengal, 30 kilometres away from the mainland. The Bangladesh government has constructed buildings on the island that are large enough to house 100,000 Rohingya people.
