Dhaka bag first win after a low-scoring thriller
The chase was not as easy for Dhaka as the scorecard suggests. Chasing down a small total, they were off to a sedate start, scoring only 22 for one in the powerplay.
Beximco Dhaka won a low-scoring thriller to register their first win in the ongoing Bangabandhu T20 Cup. They beat Fortune Barishal by seven wickets in the ninth match of the tournament at the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
The chase was not as easy for Dhaka as the scorecard suggests. Chasing down a small total, they were off to a sedate start, scoring only 22 for one in the powerplay.
Both the openers were back in the pavilion by the seventh over with the score only 23. Mushfiqur Rahim promoted himself to number three and held the innings together. Tanzid Hasan Tamim scored a handy 20-ball 22 before getting dismissed in the 12th over, with his team still requiring 54 off 48 balls to win.
Yasir Ali Rabbi came out with a positive frame of mind. It looked as if he was playing in a different pitch altogether. He looked rock solid while everyone else struggled. The right-hander looked to score and picked up boundaries as well. He along with Mushfiqur Rahim ensured that they did not make the chase too difficult for themselves.
Yasir remained unbeaten on a sublime 44 off 30 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes. Mushfiqur saw it through with an unbeaten 23 off 34. In the end, they went past Barishal's total with seven balls to spare.
Sent in to bat by the Dhaka skipper Mushfiqur Rahim, the openers of Barishal made a steady start. Saif Hassan, in his first match, opened with his skipper Tamim Iqbal as Mehidy Hasan Miraz dropped down to number seven. But Saif couldn't make use of the opportunity and managed only 9 runs off 14 balls. His dismissal in the fifth over brought Parvez Hossain Emon to the crease who surprisingly played an aerial shot in his very first ball that led to his downfall. Off-spinner Robiul Islam Robi accounted for both the dismissals.
Afif Hossain, who came in at number four, couldn't bother the scorers even after playing seven balls.
Skipper Tamim Iqbal, like the previous match, got off to a steady start but couldn't capitalise on it. The southpaw was dismissed for a run-a-ball 31 by Robiul, who returned with bowling figures of 4-0-20-4.
Towhid Hridoy put on 26 off 29 with Mehidy Hasan Miraz for the sixth wicket to take the total past 100 in a surface that looked sluggish. Hridoy top-scored for Barishal with 33 off 33 as they posted 108 for the loss of eight wickets after 20 overs.
Apart from Robiul's four wickets, left-arm pacer Shafiqul Islam took two wickets conceding only 10 off three overs. Nayeem Hasan bowled superbly well, taking the wicket of Irfan Sukkur giving away only eight runs off four overs. Rubel Hossain also picked up a wicket at the back end.
Robiul Islam Robi was adjudged player of the match for his terrific bowling display.
