Tamim wants to create ‘Bangladeshi Brand of Cricket’
Tamim said they should not follow the style of other countries rather they should create their own style of cricket, considering their team culture, strength, weakness, and other factors.
Bangladesh ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal is keen to create a brand of cricket, which would show them the way to be successful on a regular basis in the International circuit.
Tamim said they should not follow the style of other countries rather they should create their own style of cricket, considering their team culture, strength, weakness, and other factors.
According to him, where their team strength lies, they should focus on that and that should be called their 'brand' of cricket.
The stylish left-hand opener in fact wants to go with 'Bangladeshi Brand of Cricket' in the first ODI against West Indies tomorrow at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. In fact, he would make his debut as regular captain of the Bangladesh ODI team with this match.
"I always give priority to develop Bangladeshi brand of cricket. I have always said that every country has its own style. So, I don't think we should follow anyone else," he said here today while interacting with the media in a virtual press conference.
"We may not be as strong as the West Indies, or build up like Australia. But we have a lot of advantages that others do not have in the team."
He went on to say: "What I want to create is the Bangladeshi brand of cricket that we should play? We want to focus on that without following others. We have to focus on where our strength lies. In fact, we will play well if we only focus on our strength and mainly it should be our brand."
As a captain, Tamim's record, however, is not good enough. He led the side in the Sri Lanka tour for a three-match ODI series as stand-in captain immediately after the 2019 World Cup and returned the country with being whitewashed against a weakened Lankan side.
After being appointed as ODI skipper of the team following Mashrafe Bin Mortaza's resignation from the post last March, Tamim captained in two domestic tournaments and both times failed to lead his side to the final.
He, however, said before taking over the side as full-time captain, it was good for him to do captaincy in two domestic tournaments.
'It's a good thing that I was able to captain two tournaments before I started captaincy in international cricket," he said, adding that his own style of captaincy will be created as time progresses.
"Unfortunately we missed several series due to the pandemic. Both tournaments were tough for me. I learned a lot because it was difficult. If I do well, I will take it forward. And the style of captaincy will be created over time. Now if I say one thing and the situation is different in the middle, it has no value. I think people will understand over time, and I will understand where I am going. You also have to consider what situation you are playing in. Sometimes you have to think differently," he remarked.
