48 Indian fishermen detained for illegally fishing in Bangladesh waters
Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Coast Guard have detained 48 Indian fishermen with three trawlers for illegally fishing in Bangladesh waters of the Bay of Bengal amid a 22-day government ban on hilsa fishing.
The fishermen were detained from the deep sea adjacent to the fairway near Mongla Port in Bagerhat yesterday afternoon (17 October) and later handed over to police this morning (18 October), confirmed Mongla Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Anisur Rahman.
Preparations were on to file separate cases by the navy and coast guard against the detainees on charges of illegal fishing, he added.
The 22-day ban on hilsa fishing, aimed at protecting marine resources, began at midnight on 12 October.
