Addl SP Kafi placed on 8-day remand in abduction case
This morning, Kafi was produced before the court in connection with the case filed over the abduction of Engineer Arif Moin Uddin and ransom demand
A Dhaka court has placed Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullahil Kafi on an eight-day remand in an abduction case.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Akhtaruzzaman issued the remand order today (4 September).
The police officer was detained by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on 2 September, in relation to the killing and burning of students in Ashulia on 5 August. He was subsequently taken to the DB office for questioning.
But, yesterday morning, Kafi was brought before the court in the case filed over the abduction of Engineer Arif Moin Uddin and the associated ransom demand.
During the hearing, Sub-Inspector Abul Kalam Azad of Hazaribagh Police Station, who is the investigating officer, requested a ten-day remand. Kafi's lawyer sought bail and requested the remand plea be cancelled.
Following the hearing, the court denied Kafi's bail application and granted an eight-day remand.
According to the case statement, while serving as additional deputy commissioner of police in Dhanmondi in 2019, Kafi allegedly abducted Arif Moin Uddin with the assistance of former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed, police officer Maruf Hossain Sarder, former Hazaribagh officer-in-charge Ikram Ali Mia, and 10-12 unidentified individuals.
The abductors reportedly demanded and collected ransom from Arif's family.
Arif Moin Uddin filed the case with Hazaribagh Police Station on 30 August.
