Ex-minister Saber granted bail in six cases; released from jail
Saber’s lawyer Morshed Alam Shaheen told The Business Standard that there is no bar to his release from jail as there is no case against him
Saber Hossain Chowdhury, former minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has been freed from jail after being granted bail in six cases, including murder and attempted murder cases.
Following a hearing today, the court of Dhaka's Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan and Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziaur Rahman granted his bail.
He was granted bail in two murder cases and two attempted murder cases filed in Khilgaon Police Station and two more attempted murder cases in Paltan Police Station.
Saber's lawyer Morshed Alam Shaheen told The Business Standard that there is no bar to his release from jail as there is no case against him.
He was released around 6:40pm.
He was placed on a five-day remand in connection with the murder of BNP activist Mokbul in 2022 after violence centring a party rally. A murder case was registered on 30 September this year at the Paltan Police Station.
During this remand period, the police produced him in court today. The investigating officer of the case Sub-Inspector Nazmul Hasan of Paltan Police Station submitted a report mentioning that Saber could not answer any questions during the interrogation.
The police said Saber is physically ill and suffering from heart disease, and thus, interrogating him in police custody in his current physical condition will not yield the desired information.
A team of Detective Branch of police arrested him from the capital's Gulshan area on Sunday (6 October).
After his arrest, Dhaka's Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubul Haque the next day rejected his bail application and granted a five-day remand. Besides, the court granted the application to show him arrested in four separate murder cases filed in the Khilgaon Police Station.
