ACC seeks wealth information of Papul’s wife, daughter
Papul’s family is accused of conducting illegal transactions worth Tk148 crore and concealing information about properties worth around Tk2.31 crore
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has asked Selina Islam, wife of Mohammad Shahid Islam alias Kazi Papul, and their daughter Wafa Islam to submit their wealth statements to it.
A notice signed by ACC Director Syed Iqbal Hossain has been sent asking them to submit the information within 21 working days.
Laxmipur-2 Independent Member of Parliament (MP) Kazi Papul was arrested in Kuwait on 6 June this year on charges of human trafficking and money laundering.
He later confessed to those charges, and also acknowledged involvement in illegal visa trading and bribing Kuwaiti officials in this regard, reported the country's media.
A Kuwaiti court began the trial of MP Papul and other accused on 17 September, after rejecting his acquittal plea in the case, which charged him with human trafficking, money laundering, bribery and threatening state security.
Meanwhile, the ACC filed a case in the second week of November against Papul, his wife Selina Islam, who is also a lawmaker from seats reserved for women, their daughter Wafa Islam and Papul's sister-in-law Jesmin Akhter on charges of money laundering and amassing illegal wealth.
They were accused of conducting illegal transactions worth Tk148 crore and concealing information about properties worth around Tk2.31 crore.
MP Papul is currently behind bars in Kuwait, and an ACC investigation is currently underway on the lawmaker couple's accumulation of wealth beyond known sources of income.
