Two Chhatra League leaders arrested for killing students in Ctg, Feni
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two Chhatra League leaders accused of killing students during the July violence centring the Anti-discrimination Student Movement in Chattogram and Feni.
The arrests were made last night (15 September), according to a press release issued by RAB-7 this morning.
The arrestees are Chhanua Union Chhatra League general secretary Saidul Haque Rifat, and an executive member of Chandgaon Thana branch Md Istiaq Ali Wasif.
According to RAB, both were fugitives, facing charges of murder and attempted murder in two separate cases filed in Chattogram and Feni.
Saidul Haque Rifat was arrested over an incident that occurred on 4 August during the student-led protests under the Mohipal flyover in Feni. Protesters, including 20-year-old student Saidul Islam, were rallying when the accused opened fire on the crowd using illegal firearms.
Saidul Islam was shot dead. The attackers allegedly shot him 14-16 times and brutally beat him.
Following the attack, the victim's father filed a case at the Feni Model Police Station against 94 named individuals and 100-150 unidentified suspects.
RAB's investigation revealed that Saidul Haque Rifat had been hiding in the CDA Avenue area under Panchlaish Police Station in Chattogram. RAB then apprehended him last night.
In another incident on 4 August, in the Chandgaon area of Chattogram, Chhatra League members, armed with firearms and sharp weapons, attacked students. Istiaq Ali Wasif, who participated in the attack, has eight prior cases against him, including charges of violence, possession of illegal weapons, and attempted murder, according to the RAB media release.
Istiaq Ali Wasif had also been involved in an earlier incident on 24 May, where he led an assault on Juba Dal general secretary Mansur Alam. A case related to this attack was filed at Chandgaon Police Station on 4 September.
RAB tracked Wasif's location in the Bahaddarhat area of Chattogram and arrested him last night.
