Ex-addl SP Kafi, ex-DMP chief Asaduzzaman Mia placed on remand in murder cases
Abdullahil Kafi was placed on a fresh five-day remand and former DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia was placed on a seven-day remand
Former Dhaka district additional police superintendent Abdullahil Kafi and former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia were placed on remand today (12 September) by Dhaka courts in connection with separate murder cases.
Abdullahil Kafi was placed on a fresh five-day remand for his alleged involvement in the murder of Ashabul Yeamin, a student of the Military Institute of Science and Technology. Yeamin was killed in Savar during the student movement on 18 July.
The remand order was issued by Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Julhas Uddin after Md Abdulla Biswas, an inspector of Savar police station and the investigation officer in the case, requested a seven-day remand.
Earlier, Kafi had been on an eight-day remand in an abduction and ransom case. Police later appealed for his arrest in the Ashabul Yeamin murder case, seeking a seven-day remand. The court granted the appeal and placed him on a five-day remand.
In a separate case, former DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia was placed on a seven-day remand in connection with the murder of Nuruzzaman Jony, former general secretary of Khilgaon Thana Chhatra Dal.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam passed the remand order after police produced Asaduzzaman Mia in court with a 10-day remand plea.
Members of the Rapid Action Battalion arrested him from the capital's Mohakhali area on 11 September night.
Nuruzzaman Jony was reportedly picked up by the Detective Branch (DB) of police on 19 September 2015 and was killed in a so-called "crossfire" the following day.
Joni's father Yakub Ali filed the case with Khilgaon police station against 13 police officers including the then DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia on 3 September.
Asaduzzaman Mia served as DMP commissioner from 7 January 2015 until his retirement on 13 August 2019. He was then appointed on a contractual basis as commissioner of DMP for one month, from 14 August to 13 September 2019.
On 14 September 2019, he was appointed as the chief executive officer of the newly formed National Security Cell under the Cabinet Division, where he served until his contract expired in September 2022.
In recent months, Asaduzzaman has faced allegations of corruption and illegally amassing wealth. Several media reports claim that he and his family own multiple plots, apartments, lands, and companies in Dhaka.
