Journalists Mozammel Babu and Shyamal Dutta detained while trying to flee to India
They have been in hiding since the fall of the Awami League government
Ekattor TV CEO Mozammel Haque Babu, Daily Bhorer Kagoj Editor Shyamal Dutta and two other people have been detained today (16 September).
Locals detained them after stopping their car around 6am while they were trying to flee to India through the border at Dhobaura upazila of Mymensingh, Dhobaura OC Chan Miah told TBS.
The other two detained are Ekattor TV senior reporter Mahbubur Rahman and the car's driver, reports media.
Later they were handed over to police, confirmed Superintendent of Mymensingh police Azizul Islam.
"The matter has been reported to the police headquarters. Any police station that has a case against them can take their custody by providing proper information. There is no case against them in Mymensingh," said Additional Superintendent of Mymensingh Police (Crime) Shamim Hossain.
Mozammel Haque Babu and Shyamal Dutta, among a few other journalists, have been accused in several complaints under the International Crimes Tribunal and several cases at various police stations of the country on charges of inciting violence during the protests led by the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. They have been in hiding since the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August.
Shyamal Dutta is also the general secretary of the National Press Club while Mozammel Haque Babu held the position of the president of Editors Guild since 2020.
