Metro rail suspension: Commuters suffer as city in traffic knots
Commuters' woes worsened this morning as several parts of the city were in knots due to increasing traffic congestion.
Contacted, Assistant Commissioner of Traffic in the Shahbagh zone Mehedi Hasan Shakil attributed the gridlock to the metro rail suspension along the Agargaon-Motijheel route.
Several other traffic officials, posted at Agargaon and Ramna area, told TBS that traffic congestion surged after the metro rail disruption which happened this morning at around 9:40am due to technical issues.
A commuter travelling from Dhanmondi to Shahbagh, Nilima Faris, said it took her nearly a couple of hours to get to work this morning.
School and office goers alike suffered as the roads are locked in the capital's Farmgate, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Jahangir Gate, Karwan Bazar, Shahbagh, Banglamotor, Mirpur areas.
Iftekhar Alam, a National University student who was supposed to board the metro to get to Banglamotor this afternoon, said it took him an hour and a half to get to his destination, whereas it usually takes him only 15-20 minutes by metro.
"We went to the metro station but the service was disrupted so we had to grab a CNG that costs much more amid terrible traffic," he added.
Hundreds of people were seen waiting for the bus outside the metro station in Agargaon this morning.
A resident of Mirpur named Md Sifullah Toha reached Eskaton Garden Road this afternoon after struggling over two hours of heavy traffic. He travelled halfway on the metro, then took a bike and finally walked to work.
