Mob lynching at DU: 6 students, including ex-BCL leader, arrested

Police have arrested six students, including a former Chhatra League leader, in connection with the lynching of Tofazzal Hossain on suspicion of theft at the Fazlul Haque Hall of Dhaka University.
"The police are continuing their efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects. We will investigate the incident thoroughly to uncover the truth," Muhammad Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (DC) (media and publication) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) told the media at a press conference at Minto Road today (19 September).
The Detective Branch (DB) is also working to arrest the others accused, he said.
The arrestees are Md Jalal Mia, 25, former Chhatra League leader of Fazlul Huq hall unit and a student of the Physics Department, Suman Mia, 21 of the Soil, Water and Environment Department, Mottakin Sakin of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Al Hossain Sazzad of Geography, Wazibul Alam and Ahsan Ullah.
The police official further said the body of the deceased has been handed over to the family after an autopsy.
When asked about who committed the crime and the circumstances, he said, "Initially, we learned that the young man was taken to the guest room of Fazlul Haq Hall and beaten on suspicion of theft.
"Later, the young man was declared dead around 12:45am at Dhaka Medical College Hospital."
In response to a question about whether the arrestees are linked to any political affiliations, the DC said, "The matter is under investigation."
Earlier today, the DU administration filed a murder case with the Shahbagh Police Station over the death of Tofazzal Hossain.
Mohammad Amanullah, a supervisor at the university's estate office, filed the case against unidentified accused as plaintiff.
