Police arrest one more over killing of Chhatra League leader Shamim in mob lynching
With this, two people have been arrested over Shamim’s killing till now
Police have arrested another over the killing of Shamim Ahmed alias Shamim Mollah, former organisational secretary of the JU Chhatra League, during a mob lynching at the campus on 18 September.
The arrestee has been identified as Md Saiful Islam Bhuiyan. He is a student from Batch 52 of the university's Pharmacy department and a resident of Maulana Bhasani Hall.
Police arrested him during a drive from the capital's Turag area around 11am yesterday night (29 September), said Abu Bakar Siddique, officer-in-charge of Ashulia police station.
With this, two people have been arrested over Shamim's killing till now.
Earlier, JU's Chief Security Officer Shudipta Shahin filed a case with Ashulia police station over Shamim's killing on 19 September.
Saiful has been made the fourth accused in the case, the OC said.
Currently, only one person is behind bars in connection with the murder. He is Mahmudul Hasan Raihan, a student from the English Department, the third accused in the murder case filed against 11 people.
He was arrested early on 22 September at a relative's house in the Rajendranagar area of Gazipur, as confirmed by Ashulia police.
On 23 September, Raihan was presented before Senior Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Zulhas Uddin in Dhaka, where he agreed to provide a confession in court, which was subsequently recorded before being remanded to jail.
Shamim, who was beaten up by the university students on 18 September, died while undergoing treatment at a Savar Hospital.
The university students beat up Shamim for allegedly leading an attack on protesting students at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on the night of 15 July.
When he was later brought to the proctor's office, angry students attacked him again.
Proctor AKM Rashidul Alam stated that during initial questioning at the proctor's office, Shamim admitted his involvement in the attack on students and revealed the names of other accomplices to the police.
He was handed over to Ashulia Police Station around 8:30pm, after which police admitted him to Savar Gonoshasthaya Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.
