Prioritise duty over political allegiance: CEC to DCs, SPs
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has directed the deputy commissioners (DCs) and superintendents of police (SPs) across the country to perform their duties without political bias.
"There will be a strong hope that you instill a sense of trust and confidence in the public by carrying out your responsibilities with unwavering impartiality in the forthcoming parliamentary election, serving as employees of the state," he said while inaugurating an election workshop of DCs and SPs held at the Election Training Institute on Saturday.
"Holding a position of such significance is not solely a matter of chance; it hinges on one's qualifications. Remember, you hold the role of a government official, a representative of the republic, and your competence has earned you this position."
"We've overseen approximately 1,200 elections, and I'm deeply appreciative of the unwavering support extended to us by the administration and law enforcement throughout these electoral processes," he remarked.
Expressing optimism for a smooth and peaceful electoral process, the chief election commissioner (CEC) emphasised that the upcoming national election's success depends on the free exercise of voting rights by the people. "For this, it is vital that there are no irregularities or violence during the elections."
Election Commissioner Md Anisur Rahman has said the schedule for the upcoming general election will be announced in November and the polls will be held in the first week of January.
Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd) Md Ahsan Habib Khan praised the DC-SPs as trusted assistants of the Election Commission in the field.
He expressed his appreciation, stating, "In my perspective, you serve as the Election Commission's trusted assistants in the field, representing us. Your unwavering commitment to maintaining 100% neutrality in the elections held since our tenure began has been commendable."
Ahsan Habib went on to commend their collective efforts, saying, "As a result, each election has been conducted fairly and peacefully, creating a celebratory atmosphere free from violence. I extend my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to all of you. I firmly believe that this trend will continue in the upcoming 12th Jatiya Sangsad Elections."
He added, "To enhance knowledge, there is a significant need for training. Some of you have extensive experience in supervising elections, while others may be relatively new. I trust that after this training, everyone will be equally confident in their ability to ensure a fair and acceptable election."
Ahsan Habib encouraged a forward-looking approach, saying, "I prefer not to dwell on past issues or criticisms. Instead, let's learn from the past and collectively set an example of conducting fair elections for future generations to follow."
