476 die in August road accidents: Jatri Kalyan Samity
Highest number of accidents occurred in Dhaka division
There were 467 road accidents across the country in August, resulting in 476 deaths and 985 injuries, according to Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity.
In addition, there were 10 accidents on the railways and 13 on waterways. Overall, including road, rail, and waterway accidents, there were 490 incidents resulting in 534 deaths and 989 injuries.
The Jatri Kalyan Samity released the information in a press statement on Thursday (19 September).
The report, signed by Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, secretary general of the organisation, notes that the highest number of road accidents occurred in the Dhaka Division, with 117 accidents causing 121 deaths and 261 injuries.
The lowest number of accidents was in the Barishal Division, with 27 accidents resulting in 26 deaths and 93 injuries.
During this period, there were 193 motorcycle accidents, leading to at least 206 deaths and 201 injuries. Motorcycles accounted for 41.32% of the total accidents, 43.27% of the deaths, and 20.40% of the injuries.
The report was compiled by the accident monitoring cell of the organisation, which monitors news of road, rail, and waterway accidents published in widely circulated and credible national, regional, and online newspapers.
According to the report, 41.54% of the total accidents involved vehicle collisions, 33.19% were head-on crashes, 22.05% involved loss of control leading to falls into ditches, 2.56% were due to various other reasons, 0.42% involved train collisions, and 0.21% were caused by scarfs getting caught in vehicle wheels.
