Section 144 imposed in Rangamati, Khagrachari
The local administrations has imposed Section 144 in Rangamati and Khagrachari districts due to the deteriorating law and order situation and the risk of property damage.
In a public notice, signed by Rangamati District Magistrate Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Khan, Section 144 was imposed in the municipal areas of Rangamati from 1pm today (20 September) until further notice.
If anyone attempts to violate the imposed restriction, legal action will be taken against them, the notice warned.
In another notice, signed by Khagrachari Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Sujan Chandra Roy, the restriction was imposed in the municipal areas of Khagrachari from 2pm to 9pm today.
Khagrachari Deputy Commissioner Md Sahiduzzaman told The Business Standard that army and BGB have been deployed there to control the situation.
The actions comes in the backdrop of repeated clashes between Bangalis and the indigenous people in Khagrachari.
On Wednesday, a man named Md Mamun was beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Khagrachari. Following the death, Bangali students brought out a protest rally yesterday. Many provocative speeches were given, according to eye-witnesses.
At one point, heated arguments broke out between the Bangalis and the indigenous people.
Clashes ensued and at one point, miscreants set fire to about 50 shops at Larma Square in Dighinala upazila. Five people were injured in the incident.
Later at night, there were shootings in Narankhaiya area of Khagrachari sadar where three people were killed and nine people were injured.
in Rangamati, violent clashes and counter-clashes have left one person dead and over fifty injured.
