Students attacked in Mirpur for preventing extortion

At least eight students were injured in the capital's Mirpur yesterday (17 September) when they came under attack for preventing extortion.
The incident took place in an alley of Mirpur-13 area around 10:30pm.
One of the injured, SM Sayem, alleged that a person named Ataullah and his followers beat up two students for blocking an extortion attempt at the sidewalk shops in Mirpur-13.
When 15-20 more students, including Sayem, went to the spot, they were attacked too, he added.
"A group of 20-25 armed men, including Ataullah, attacked us. They attacked my cousin Sabbir in the head with a sharp machete. They also beat me with sticks," Sayem told The Business Standard.
"We managed to nab one extortionist and later handed him over to police," he added.
Ataullah could not be reached for a comment over the matter.
