Students turn in Tk18 lakh left on street in grocery bag to police
With permission from the court, the money will now be deposited in the state treasury, said SM Masud Parvez, officer-in-charge (OC) of Boalia Police Station in Rajshahi
Students in Rajshahi's Bhadra area have turned in a grocery bag containing Tk18 lakh and a golden metallic object left on the city street.
Several students went to the Boalia Police Station around 11am today (18 August) to turn in the money.
During this time, Rajshahi's Executive Magistrate Shamsul Alam and the Army's Warrant Officer Iqbal Hossain were at the station. The officer-in-charge (OC) of Boalia Police Station, SM Masud Parvez, took the money into police custody.
Police reported that a group of students patrolling the streets early this morning found the money in the Bhadra area of the city.
The students said they noticed an abandoned shopping bag on the streets as they returned to their city hostel after their night patrol.
Upon closer inspection, the students found multiple bundles of money and a two-inch golden-coloured metallic object inside the bag.
The students then took the bag full of money to the Boalia Police Station in Rajshahi. There, in the presence of police, the army, and a magistrate, the recovered money was counted.
The bag contained Tk17.92 lakh.
"With permission from the court, the money will now be deposited in the state treasury, and the metallic object is made of brass. The presence of the magistrate facilitated the examination and verification of the object, bringing in a goldsmith's certificate," said OC SM Masud Parvez.
He also said investigations will be conducted to determine the owner of the money, whether it is illicit or if a criminal accidentally dropped it.
SM Masud Parvez said legal actions will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
