The fleet includes a separate bus for women with a female driver and supervisor
The Sylhet City Corporation on Wednesday launched public transport service Nagar Express with a fleet of 41 buses.
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen inaugurated the bus service at the Nagar Bhaban.
"The launching of Nagar Express is a great achievement for us. I expect it brings convenience to the city dwellers," he said.
Ariful Haque Chowdhury, mayor of the Sylhet City Corporation, said, "We are not competitors of the transport owners or the transport sector labourers. We want to bring discipline to the Sylhet city transport sector by working together with everyone. We will make Sylhet a model city for all."
According to sources, there is a separate bus for women among the 41 buses. The driver and supervisor of that bus are also women.
Initially, these buses will go from Tukerbazar to Hetimganj via Medical Road, from Tukerbazar to Bandar to Bateshwar, Surima Market Point to Hetimganj, and from the airport to Moghlabazar's Hajiganj via Kadamtali.
Skilled drivers and supervisors have already been appointed and the fares have been fixed.
Earlier in 2008, a public transport service named Town Bus started in Sylhet City Corporation with 35 mini-buses, under the private initiative of Nitol Motors. However, the service was shut down three years ago due to losses.
