Police have arrested a youth in Patiya upazila of Chattogarm today (30 September) over allegations of posting offensive social media posts insulting Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), which sparked outrage among the local Muslim community.
The accused, identified as Partha Biswas Pintu, 22, from the Lawarkhil area under Shobhandandi union, was taken into custody following the circulation of screenshots of his posts on Facebook, reads a press statement from the media wing of Chattogram District Police.
District special branch Additional Superintendent of Police Abu Tayub Mohammad Arif Hosen has confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
A case was filed with Patiya Police Station, and the accused has been presented before the court. Authorities have applied for his remand to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident, reads the statement.
According to police, on 29 September, Partha Biswas allegedly posted offensive content about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from his personal Facebook account, accompanied by "derogatory" comments in the post's comment section. As the screenshots went viral, anger grew within the community, leading to calls for swift action.
In response to the rising tension, Patiya Police Station launched an immediate investigation and tracked down the accused in Chattogram city.
Partha was arrested during a raid and brought to the police station for questioning, where he admitted to making the offensive posts, police said in the statement.
