The video, which surfaced on Saturday (21 September) on Facebook, captured a disturbing scene from 14 August under the Akhtaruzzaman flyover in Chattogram but only came to public attention yesterday.
The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Shahadat Hossain, the son of late Mohammad Harun of Nadna village of Panchbaria union under Sonaimuri police station of Noakhali district.
He used to live in Boiler Colony of BRTC area under Kotwali police station of the city. He worked in a fruit shop in the city.
According to police, Shahadat's lifeless body was found late on the night of 14 August in the city's Prabartak Intersection.
He was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital by police, where doctors pronounced him dead.
His uncle, Harun, had filed a case at Panchlaish police station the following day, accusing unknown persons, but no motive or suspects had been identified.
Shahadat's wife, Sharmin Akhtar, described her frantic efforts to locate him after he failed to return home from work on 13 August. She discovered the video online, leading her to the grim realisation that her husband was the victim shown being tied up and beaten.
Police are now intensifying efforts to identify Shahadat's attackers, who were seen singing as they inflicted the fatal blows.
"The video has been crucial in identifying Shahadat, and now we are working to track down those responsible for this heinous crime," said Mohammad Solaiman, the officer-in-charge of Panchlaish police station.
