Intensify research to increase production of local fish varieties: Fisheries secretary
He also called for raising government fish fry release programmes twofold from that of the last year
Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Rawnak Mahmud on Monday stressed the need for intensifying research activities to increase the production of local varieties of fish.
"This year, we have to work to raise the fish fry release programmes twofold from that of the last year to enhance fish production," he said.
"Government hatcheries have to increase fish fry production so that fish farmers can be provided with free fish fry in the post-flood period. Besides, private-sector hatcheries also need to be involved with the fish fry release programmes of the government."
The fisheries secretary said this while exchanging views with officials of the Fisheries Department and divisional fisheries offices at the secretariat and addressing the concluding virtual meeting of the National Fisheries Week, 2020.
Shyamal Chandra Karmakar, additional secretary of the fisheries and livestock ministry; Kazi Shams Afroz, director general of the fisheries department; senior officials of the fisheries department and deputy directors of the divisional fisheries offices also participated in the virtual meeting.
At the meeting, the fisheries secretary announced the conclusion of the National Fisheries Week, 2020, thanking all stakeholders.
The National Fisheries Week had commenced on July 21 with the theme Machh Utpadan Briddhi Kori, Shukhi Samriddha Desh Gori (Let us Increase Fish Production and Build a Happy and Prosperous Country).
