Apparel workers stage angry protest over job cut
They demanded unpaid wages and reinstatement of terminated workers
Hundreds of apparel workers yesterday took protest to the streets at Azampur in the capital's Uttara.
They demanded unpaid wages and withdrawal of termination.
At one stage, these workers of Dakshin Khan's Versatile Group blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, demanding the reinstatement of terminated ones.
This caused traffic congestion on both sides of the road.
An operator of the factory said, "The authority terminated 300 of its 1,200 workers without any prior notice. Even they did not pay us arrears."
Shochin Mollick, assistant commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Uttara zone, told to the Business Standard, "We sat with the factory authorities. They assured us to solve the issue as soon as possible.
"With that assurance, the workers withdrew the blockade.
