Musical instrument or prop?

Have you seen those numerous Bengali movies where people attend a party and a character plays a song in the piano? But, have you seem pianos at Bengali households that often? And, how many people do you know who actually play this musical instrument?

For Riaz, film hero, finding a piano at a Holud Sandhya is not a problem. The more you listen to Pore Na Chokher Polok, the more you discover Riaz's talent. You will find, playing a piano like an expert and composing on it is a mere plain sailing.

In movie Praner Cheye Priyo, the actor tries makes a show out of his musical talents without any pretext, he plays the saxophone like a snake charmer around Ravina, the heroine, also without any point.

Ask a jazz musician how tough it is to play a saxophone with one hand. It might be tough for them but not for our Bengali movie's hero Ferdous. Though he is a medical student, his skill, in Sagorer Motoi Govir, as a musician would leave you to wonder again.

His talent does not end here. After a while, you realise that to play the guitar, one does not need to play it. Symphony creates on its own, even if our heroes do not touch any cord.

Shakib Khan and Subhashree have taken this legacy seriously and taken that to another level in the song Sholoana. Shakib's talent is always mesmerising. Do you know that he knows how to play the guitar by moving his belly only? Do not doubt Shakib Khan. It might be another of his 'science'.

We have Ananta Jalil, just to turn everything impossible to possible. With great ease, he can play heavy metal by simply shaking a guitar. Well, someone should make him remember that he is not preparing jhalmuri. Whatever! You cannot question Ananta!

In this longstanding trend of Bengali movies, we see actors using musical instruments as mere showpieces. They make ridiculous movements which do not even remotely mimic the playing technics. Where is the declaration? Call a spade a spade, musical instruments in our movies are simply props. And if anyone wants to deny that, please brood over the poor quality of music accompanying the vivid show of some clueless actors acing an instrument!
