Police say the firing took place accidentally while law enforcers were trying to discipline the disorderly people before a TCB sale station
Two persons including a woman were allegedly shot by police after they went to buy onions from an open market sale station of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) in Sylhet on Monday.
The incident took place around 2pm before Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium near Rikabi Bazar in the city.
Chandrashekhor Singh, one of the injured, was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Officer-in-Charge of Kotowali Police Station Selim Mia said the TCB had been selling onions at three spots in the city at Tk45 per kilogram since morning.
"People thronged before the onion trucks shoving each other. The law enforcement officials were trying to bring the situation under control, but a gun held by one of the officials accidentally went off," he said.
According to TCB officials, the Sylhet Metropolitan Police on Friday seized around 7,000 kilograms of onions that were brought from India illegally. The onions were being sold by the TCB in open market on the day.
