Vermicelli sales pick up to sweeten Eid
For Bangladeshis, Eid without vermicelli or Shemai is unthinkable
The sales of the traditional dessert Vermicelli have picked up just before Eid as Dhakaites flocked to the kitchen markets today to buy the item.
The city dwellers are also buying sugar and milk – two ingredients to prepare sweet vermicelli, or Shemai.
Grocery stores in Dhaka's Hatirpool Bazar and Kathalbagan Bazar have been displaying different vermicelli brands for the customers.
"People are mostly looking for vermicelli and spices today," said Shopkeeper Md Mozammel in Hatirpool Bazar, adding, "The price did not change compared to last year."
Md Imran, a customer who came to purchase vermicelli at Kathalbagan Bazar, said, "Different types of vermicelli items are cooked at my home on Eid. It is almost a tradition for us to start our day by having sweet Shemai before going for Eid prayers."
Meanwhile, aromatic rice, milk, and sugar were in high demand at the grocery stores on the eve of the biggest religious festival for Muslims.
