Fourteen sailors of lighter ship MV Akhter Banu, which sank in the Bay of Bengal on Saturday morning due to rough weather, have been rescued alive.
They were rescued from the Nijhum Island area at around 10:00 am on Sunday morning with the help of a fishing trawler.
Zahid Hossain, operation in-charge of Litmond Shipping, MV Akhter Banu's cargo agent, said, "The process of bringing the rescued sailors back to Chattogram is underway. Two trawlers have been sent."

He added that the ship, carrying 1800 tonnes of wheat, sank in Hatia area on Saturday morning on its way to Narayanganj from Chattogram port's outer anchorage.
The sailors are currently staying in Hatiya Suryamukhi Achhka Bazar area.
When contacted Ziaul Karim, master of MV Akhter Banu, said, "Water started entering the ship with strong winds on Saturday morning. We tried hard but could not reach the shore. Then, we wore life jackets and jumped into the sea. After 24 hours, we were rescued from Nijhum Island area by the locals working in a fishing trawler."
