Architect Mubasshar Hussain dies at 79
Prominent architect, valiant freedom fighter, and activist Mubasshar Hussain died at the Bangladesh Specialised Hospital in the capital's Shyamoli around 1:38am on Monday. He was 79 years old.
Mubasshar also served as the president of the Institute of Architects Bangladesh.
The institute has said he had been ill for a long time and had been kept in the intensive care unit for the last two months. He was not able to undergo dialysis then.
Architect Iqbal Habib said, "We tried to take him abroad [for better treatment], but it was not possible due to the delicate condition of his health."
Mubasshar was also the principal architect of Assoconsult Ltd and served as presidents of the Commonwealth Association of Architects and the Architects Regional Council, Asia Arcasia.
His notable works include Chattogram railway station, Prashika Bhaban, and Grameen Bank Bhaban.
On Monday afternoon, his body was kept at the Institute of Architects premises in Agargaon in the capital for everyone to pay their respects. Funeral prayers were held there at noon, and then another round of prayers followed at Brothers Union sports club premises.
According to Mubasshar's last wish, his body will be donated to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital, the Institute of Architects has said.
Various organisations and individuals including the Institute of Architects Bangladesh, Dhaka North City Corporation, Dhaka South City Corporation, Consumers Association of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon, Urban Development Journalist Forum, Bangladesh (UDJFB) mourned the death of the architect.
Former Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director Mubasshar is the former president of the Brothers Union and the founding convener of Sommilito Krira Poribar.
The architect, vocal in environmental and civic movements, was the convener of consumer rights organisation Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) and a vice-president of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon.
Mubasshar was born on 27 December 1943 in Brahmanbaria and studied at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.
