Workers agitate for due wages at Cumilla EPZ
The protestors blocked road in front of the EPZ Wednesday morning
Over 500 current and former workers of Oasis Hi-tech Sportswear Limited in Cumilla export processing zone (EPZ) took to the streets on Wednesday, demanding their unpaid wages.
The protestors blocked a portion a road connecting Cumilla Sadar upazila to Cumilla Medical College and Hospital in front of the EPZ around 7:30am.
The protestors alleged that they were not paid for three months.
"A few days ago when we started to protest demanding our unpaid wages, an EPZ employee named Sohel assured us that the company will pay our due salaries on April 22," said one of them.
"Believing in his words when we tried to enter the EPZ to collect our salaries, but we were not allowed to enter the premises. That is why we protested," he added.
Cumilla Sadar upazila south police station acting officer-in-charge (OC) Nazrul Islam said, "We have asked the workers to maintain proper social distance while protesting. Most of the protesting workers quit their jobs a few days earlier and are protesting for their unpaid salaries."
"I have heard that the owner of the company and the agitated workers will sit to fix a date to clear the dues." Nazrul added.
But no statement was received from Comilla EPZ and Oasis Hi-tech Sportswear Limited authorities in this regard.
